302. A.C Fairbanks Co., “Regent” Mandolin, labeled inside, “A.C. Fairbanks Co. Boston, Mass,” and a nickel name plate, 36 solid rosewood and maple ribs, rosewood fret board with m.o.p. inlay and cream binding with small piece of binding missing on bottom side of first fret. Has a solid spruce top with checkered border, rosette and an ebony bridge with nickled plated bridge cover. Has two one piece tuning mechanisms and is stamped “90” between both sets of tuners. Original tooled leather case, pat. dated 1893, good condition. Provenance: A Milford, NH estate.

305. Glass Inkwell On Stand, brass plated swallow form finial lid set on a molded glass body set into a molded brass plated base with 4 paw feet, 10 1/2” tall, 7 1/2” square base, late 19th century English or American, unmarked, chips to glass well.   Provenance: A Temple, NH collection.

319. Jefferson Davis Tintype - New Discovery, 6 7/8” x 5”, tinted photograph, (circa 1861-1865). “Face Explorer” & “Beta Face,” facial recognition software programs have taken the circa 1854 daguerreotype from the Museum of the Confederacy of Virginia & the 1860 daguerreotype collection from the Chicago Historical Society & confirmed this tin type to be the same person.  Provenance: A Massachusetts photo collection. Found in a group of Civil War era photos from an estate around Worcester, MA. Steven Jerecki (Worcester – past curator of the museum) said it looked like his last known image before the Civil War – note Davis got facial erysipelas inflammation from a sickness (streptococcus) in 1858 which affected him throughout the Civil War and was noted in his physical done upon his capture at the end of the war by the U.S. He had also developed scars on chin area due to a fall when at West Point. There was facial scaring to the left temple, swelling to the eyes. Photos included: a.) Circa 1860 photograph of him courtesy of Chicago Historical Society. b.) Circa 1854 daguerreotype from The Museum of the Confederacy of Virginia.  c.) The pose in the tin type has his head tilted slightly forward (common in tin types). It shows the scar under his mouth and left lower chin, swelling to eye and eye affliction, ridge on nose, identical left side facial scars.   MORE INFO HERE

322. Scrimshaw Hippopotamus Tusk, Commemorating The Completion Of The Suez Canal, (1859-1869), with a coin silver necklace, inscribed, “1866 Aout 7, Canal Maritime de Suez 1859-1869,” lettered above the decoration. The tusk was taken on August 7, 1866 by Jules A. Amilie, (a professional hunter, hired to protect the workers from hippos & Nile crocodiles). The central portrait is of Napoleon lll flanked by French flags, the goddess of commerce & a French sailor. In the background are the Pyramids & The Temple at Karnac. The attached silver mount has his name engraved. mounted on a coin silver blocked base, approximately 12 1/2” long, good overall condition. Provenance: A New Hampshire collection.

323. Pair Of Walrus Tusks, each approximately. 21” long, the large end cross-hatch carved in 2 bands with 2 stacked rings, appear to be 19/20th century, possibly Inuit, some scratches & discoloration. Provenance: A Massachusetts collection.

Calligraphy Family History, circa 1789, multicolored calligraphy history/memoriam of the “Hawke Cushing Family,” of Pembroke, NH or MA, record of the ages of the family, with a brief character description of the wife of “Hawke Cushing.” He was born February 24th, 1745 & married to Ruth Cushing of Pembroke, Sept. 28th, 1769. Calligraphy on early paper measures 10 1/4” high x 7 3/4” wide. In an old frame & behind antique glass. Provenance: A Peterborough collector.
