301. Burton L. Spiller’s Parker
VH Grade 20ga. Shotgun: Burton Spiller wrote
Grouse Feathers in 1934 and followed it with
More Grouse Feathers
in 1938. Both of
these important upland sporting classics were published by the
famous Derrydale Press. To this day, Burton L. Spiller is referred
to as the “poet laureate of the ruffed grouse.” This VH grade Parker
20 ga. shotgun was gifted to the famous outdoor writer H.G. “Tap”
Tapply’s son, William G. Tapply, when he was a boy. Like his father,
Bill Tapply, a contributing editor for Field & Stream,
is also an accomplished sporting writer. Tapply’s story, “Burt’s
Gun,” is a narrative of the heartwarming tale of the gift of the
gun. “Burt’s Gun” has been published several times and is included
in The Orvis
Anthology: The C. F. Orvis Outdoor Writing Awards (1984 by Riverwood Press).
Accompanying this Parker is a letter of authenticity written and
signed by William G. Tapply certifying that this shotgun belonged to
Burton L. Spiller and was handed down to Tapply. Included along with
the gun and the letter is a signed copy of The Orvis Anthology containing the story “Burt’s
Gun,” as well as the “Leg-O-Mutton” leather gun case that Mr.
Spiller included with his gift to Tapply. Provenance: From the
collection of William G. Tapply, sporting author & contributing
editor to Field &
Stream magazine.
Estimate $5,000-8,000
