William Harnden Foster, 1886 - 1941, American, oil on canvas titled, “The Royal Coachman”, this painting was reproduced on the cover of the July 1932 sporting magazine, “Hunting and Fishing”, and was purchased by H.G Tapply for $25.00 when the publishers moved from Mass Ave to Newbury St., signed lower right, “F”, and inscribed on verso, “H + F for July, 7" by 8", 4 colors, proofs wanted, May 16", 23" by 20 1/4". H. G. “Tap” Tapply Collection. Lot 78 – 86B In 1935 William Harden Foster, publisher & editor of “National Sportsman Magazine”, (which later became “Outdoors Magazine”), hired 24 year old H.G. Tapply as managing editor. He edited these magazines till 1948 and wrote dozens of articles under different names. In 1939 with friends Hollie Rodman and Hugh Grey, (later editor of “Field & Stream”) he created a newsletter called, “Salt Water Sportsman”, still published today. In 1950 Tap joined the staff of “Field & Stream” as Associate Editor. Here he began writing his monthly, “Taps Tips”, column, which he wrote for 35 years. During his years as editor he rejected, mentored and edited most of the outdoor writers of his generation and was first to publish many of them. Among his friends were numerous sporting artists and illustrators such as: William Harden Foster, Aden Lassell Riply, Frank Vining Smith etc., hence the source of this collection. Tap became one of the most universally recognized and beloved outdoor writers of his time. He penned 3 books and was an expert fly tier. He invented a dry fly called the, “Nearenuf” and a bass fly known as “Taps Bug”. He died in Wolfboro, New Hampshire in 2002. 79.
