4      Pair Of Portraits Of Bernard & Jane Holmes Whittemore Of Peterborough, NH, oil on canvas, unsigned, probably done circa 1830-32 by an itinerant artist, 28" x 24", appears to have the original gilded frames, (some gold over paint), otherwise in good condition. Provenance: Full family descending history available, along with a write-up by Michele M. Stahl of the Peterborough Historical Society.

Griggs, 1827-1898, Boston, MA, member of The White Mountain School, oil on canvas landscape, signed lower center on rock, "Griggs & date," inscribed in pencil on verso stretcher, "A New England Stage Road, Woodstock, NH by SW Griggs; sketched on road from Franconia to Plymouth." Formerly arch matted, possibly the original over painted frame, 22" x 30", small center patch.  Provenance: A New York State collection.

11    Peter Stretch Tall Clock, 8 day brass works, signed on the lower edge of the brass dial, "Peter Stretch, Philadelphia," time, strike & calendar movement, walnut case with old finish and a bulls eye window, fine condition overall. Peter Stretch was the second fully corroborated clock maker in Philadelphia in 1702, 92 1/2" tall. Provenance: A Hershey, PA collector, Pook & Pook Auctioneers, exhibited at the "Lancaster County Tall Clocks", March 1993, # 4.

12    Charles Townsend Tall Clock, 8 day brass time & strike works with moon phase painted iron dial, calendar & seconds smaller dials and signed on the face, "Charles Townsend, Philadelphia, (1799-1804), mahogany case with broken arch bonnet, base missing, 95" tall, appears to be in working condition. Provenance: A Hershey, PA collection.

13    Jacob Gorgas Jr. Tall Clock, 8 day brass works with time strike and calendar movement, signed on the painted iron dial, "Jacob Gorgas, Hinkletown," walnut case with broken arch bonnet and ogee feet, 95 1/2" tall, ca. 1800, appears to be in fine working condition.  Provenance: A Hershey, PA collection, exhibited at the Hershey Museum, "Lancaster County Tall Clocks", March 1993 #9.

17    Sir Thomas Lawrence, RA, 1769-1830, England, attributed, pair of portraits, possibly husband & wife. Oil on wood panel of gentleman, unsigned, written on verso, " …Smith? Buxton, Sir Thomas Lawrence Artist Early in 1800," 10" x 8 1/2". Lady on artist board, unsigned, written on verso, "Sir Thomas Lawrence artist early in 1800," with original panel label on verso, "Improved Flemish Grand Panel Board prepared by Rowney and Forster, 51 Rathbone Place, London, England." (Romney started this company with his brother-in-law in 1806 till Foster's retirement in 1832, when the company became, George Romney & Co,"10" x 8 3/8". Both in original frames. Provenance: Descended from the Buxton family in England and New England to a NH collection & now being offered.

26    Fire Arm - James Purdey & Sons, Ltd. 20 gauge side lock shotgun with ejectors. Side by side 26" barrels are chambered for 2.75 shells. Chokes are IMP. CYL and FULL. The nicely figured walnut straight grip stock is finely checkered at the wrist and ends with a hard rubber butt pad, (missing a small butt of rubber at it's base), Length of pull measures 14.5" at the center of the butt pad. Top of left barrel reads, "Audley House, South Audley, London, England." Center barrel rib has a non reflective textured surface. The side lock plates, receiver surfaces etc. are all finely detailed with rose & scroll engraving. The checkering at the wrist and fore grip is still sharp. The case coloring remains at 99% and is very strong throughout, the bluing remains at 98%, wear at the barrels tips with a rub mark and scratch here & there. Serial #26472, circa 1951.  Comes with it's original case, snap caps, stuck shell extractor, rosewood handled screw drivers, nickel plated oil bottle, cleaning kit with rod and extra gold plating firing pins and springs housed in a screw capped horn case. Provenance: A Dublin, NH and New York collection, purchased by the consignor's father from James Purdey.

27    Fire Arm - James Purdey & Sons Ltd., 20 ga side lock shotgun, side by side 28" barrels are chambered for 2.5" shells. Chokes are CYL. and IMP. CYL. Figured walnut straight grip stock is finely checkered at the wrist and ends horizontally grooved hard butt plate. Length of pull measures 13.5" at the center of the butt. Top barrel reads, "Audley House, South Audley, London, England, made of Sir Joseph Whitsworths fluid steel." The side lock plates, receiver  etc. are all very finely detailed with rose & scroll engraving; 46% of the case coloring remains and is most visible on the left side lock plate, beneath the release lever and on other protected surfaces. The barrels & their chambers are pristine; 99% of the bluing remains, has been reconditioned. Checkered and engraved fore grip has a very slight .75" long age crack at its rear. Serial #2363XX, circa 1926. Is complete with it's own Abercrombie & Fitch branded leather case with James Purdey & Sons Ltd. label on interior lid and all accessories still in their plastic wrappers.  Provenance: A Dublin, NH and New York collection, purchased by the consignor's father from James Purdey.

28    Fire Arm - L.C. Smith Skeet Special 12ga, side by side barrels measure 26" long. Chokes are both Imp. Cyl, has a single non selective trigger, a.k.a. "The Hunter's One Trigger," and ejectors. The skeet special has a 13.5” length of pull at the center of its horizontally grooved hard butt plate. Shotgun is in wonderful working order, as it has been reconditioned. Serial #1558xx, this "Fwen" coded shotgun was shipped to, "Babcock, Hinds & Underwood," on 5/20/1937. Comes with original beaver tail fore grip and is mounted with a slim line fore grip. A copy of the letter from "The Marlins Firearms Co.," with info from L.C. Smiths Record books is included. Provenance: An Exeter, NH collector & hunter.

29    Fire-Arm - Consecutively Numbered Pair of Cogswell & Harrison Ltd 12 ga. Side lock Shotguns, in their original fitted leather case. Barrels of both #1 and #2 side by side shotguns measure 27.5" in length. Chokes on both are IMP. CYL. and CYL. Length of pull on each shotgun measures 14.75" to the center of their rubber butt pads. Both straight grip stocks are of nicely figured walnut and are both checkered at the wrist and fore grips. Barrels of both shotguns have been re-blued and show some wear to bluing at the chambers and the barrel tips. the engraved makers name and location can just be deciphered on the top rib as it has been polished after being re-blued, "Cogswell & Harrison..New Bond st, London," can be discerned after careful visual examination.  Checkering on both is worn somewhat smooth, no case coloring is evident but each gun is finely detailed with rose scroll engraving throughout.  Consecutive serial numbers are 467XX and 467XX. Rubber stacked butts on walnut stocks measure 1.5" deep. Provenance: A Dublin, NH and New York collection, purchased by the consignor's father.

30    Frank Weston Benson, 1862-1951, Massachusetts, etching "Winter Wild Fowling," pencil signed in margin lower left, "Frank W. Benson," 1927 edition of 150, PAFF #265, 11 7/8" x 9 7/8" sight. Archival quality matted & framed under glass.  Provenance: A Peterborough, NH collection.

31    Fitz Henry Lane, 1804-1865, MA, colored lithograph, "View Of Newburyport (from Salisbury), from a sketch by A. Provenance: Albert Currier V of New Ipswich, a descendent of Albert William Currier I, 2nd mayor of Newburyport, MA, (1819-1912), and owner of the Currier Shipyard.

39    French Charger Marked Jules Vieillard, depicting a young woman, beautifully framed with velvet cloth set in an ornate gold leaf gessoed frame. Charger measures 16 1/4" in diameter, mid 1800's. Jules Vieillard was the technical director of the David Johnston & Co. porcelain factory, Jules purchased the business from him and manufactured porcelain in Bordeaux France from 1845-1868, (see mark on verso). Provenance: A New Hampshire collection.

62    "Dollond" Made Celestial Telescope; brass construction telescope with adjustable focusing lens and side mounted sighting scope. Marked on the end "Dollond, London #8237," marked on the sighting scope, "Tel. SCT. REGTS. MK Ibis, Broadhurst Clarkson & Co. LTD 1940." Comes with the original swivel brass & wood tripod stand. In working condition, 48" L scope closed, 70" tall approximate height on stand. Provenance: A Hershey, PA clock collector.
