416. Autumn Grouse - Frost, Arthur Burdett. (1851 – 1928). From the set of twelve "Shooting Pictures" lithograph set published by Scribner’s in 1895. Limited edition of 2500. Image size: 12 ¾" x 20 ¼". Unframed. One of America’s favorite and most successful sporting artists, A. B. Frost’s images of upland bird and waterfowl shooting perfectly captured the sport at the turn of the 20th Century and it is for these that he is perhaps most famous. Born in Philadelphia and largely self-taught, he turned to illustration to earn a living. He illustrated over 90 books, including sporting books by Theodore Roosevelt and produced thousands of drawings for "Harper’s Weekly", "Scribner’s" and many other magazines. He also did drawings for "Uncle Remus", "Tom Sawyer" as well as numerous political and humorous works. He suffered from red-green color blindness, which is why many of his works are in gauche or black and white. When he painted in color, he aided himself by reading the labels on the paint tubes. Frost died in 1928.

434. Johnson Sea Horse 5.5 horsepower outboard motor. Excellent plus condition. Original paint. Made in the 1950’s and hardly used. Beautiful original paint. Motor has been recently completely overhauled at a cost of over $400. Includes tank and cover.

435. Mallards Rising – Clark, Roland. (1874 – 1957) Hand colored lithograph published by the Derrydale Press, 1942. #83 of 250 limited edition. Signed lower right by Clark in pencil. Nicely matted and framed. Size: 23 ½" x 26 ½" (frame); 16 3/8" x 19 ¾" (image). This is one of the rarest and most desirable of the Derrydale Press Prints, issued in an edition of 250. Roland Clark was another accomplished American sporting artist and illustrator. He illustrated many books. He was a prolific etcher, especially of game birds and his etching of pintail ducks was selected for the 1938 Federal Duck Stamp. He was also an accomplished writer and his four books, "Stray Shots", "Gunner’s Dawn", "Roland Clark’s Etchings" and "Pot Luck", all published as limited editions by the Derrydale Press, are classic sporting works.

439. Boar – Becker, O. German. Signed bronze. Length: 6 ¼". On a marble base.

440. Kit Carson – Blake, James C. "Buckeye". (1946 - ) Bronze hand painted by the artist. 15" high by 13" wide. Number 123 of a limited edition of 150. Signed on base. Proceeds from the original sale of these statues helped fund a life size statue for the Nevada State Capitol Complex in Carson City.

441. Standing Moose – Jonas, Louis. (1894 – 1971). White metal. 12" high by 11" wide. Signed on base. Also marked: Zoological Art Institute. Jonas took up taxidermy in Colorado where he learned animal anatomy. He then moved to New York and worked at the American Museum of Natural History with famous sculptors and taxidermists Carl Akeley and Herman MacNeil. Together, Jonas and Akeley created the famous "Indian Elephant Group" at the Museum. He also did "Commemorating the Grizzly Bear", bronze, at Denver’s Municipal Park; "Grizzly Bear and Cubs", Denver Museum of Natural History; 9 dinosaurs for the 1964 Sinclair Oil World’s Fair Exhibit and a Rhinoceros for the Davenport, Iowa Public Museum, and many any commissions. Very few of his smaller works were cast in bronze.

442. Wood Ducks - 1983 New Hampshire Duck Stamp Painting – Plasschaert, Richard W. Oil or acrylic on board. Size: 23 3/8" x 20 ¼" (frame); 20 3/8" x 17 ¼" (image). This artist was selected to do the 1983 New Hampshire Duck Stamp. The painting subsequently resided in the headquarters of the Fish & Game Department, which was destroyed by fire in 1984. Plasschaert then painted this replacement. He also painted the 1980 Federal duck stamp as well as a number of other state game stamps.

443. Canada Goose Decoy – 1976 Massachusetts Duck Stamp Print – Tyner, William P. Size: 15 ¼" x 18 3/8" (frame); 7 3/8" x 11 ¾" image). #149 of a limited edition of 350. Remarqued by Tyner with two geese landing in a marsh. Print signed twice by Tyner. Actual Massachusetts Duck Stamp is framed with print and signed by Tyner.

444. Sid Hirst and Jack Point - Brown, Paul. (1893 – 1958). Pencil drawing. Signed and dated 1936. Size: 14 ¾" x 16 ¾" (frame); 8 3/8" x 10 ¾" (image). Inscribed by artist: "Sid Hirst and Jack Point. Some pair – 3 starts – 3 wins - and the Whitemarsh Copper Bowl was retired. (Sid was 16 at the time of the first win)". Paul Brown was one of the foremost equestrian artists of the 20th Century. He worked in oils, watercolor and many other media. He also executed a number of prints, including 9 published for the Derrydale Press.

456. Bay Mare and Her Foal - Stull, Henry P. (1851 – 1913). Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1901. Stull was born in Canada and came to the United States at an early age. He lived in New Rochelle, NY and was an illustrator for Leslie’s Weekly Magazine. He specialized in equestrian works and especially racehorses and race scenes. Some of his paintings were published as lithographs. He is considered one of America’s best horse artists of that period. Size: 28" x 33 ½" (frame); 23 ½" x 28 ½" (image).

458. Taxidermy. Big horned sheep trophy head mounted by the famous taxidermist and sculptor James L. Clark (nameplate on back). Approximate length of horns: 35". James Clark and his wife were good friends of Walter Peterson who procured this sheep. For many years he was at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He felt that animals should be shown in their natural settings. The result was the use of dioramas at the Museum, with backgrounds painted by artists such as Carl Rungius. Clark was also a very active member of the Boone and Crockett Club, the authority and record keeper for North American big game trophy heads. Having previously devised his own scoring system, 1949 he was asked to be a member of the committee that devised a final scoring system for the Club. This system was adopted in 1950 and is still in use today. Mr. Clark died in 1969. Sold with 3 booklets "Scoring Big Game Trophies" by Clark, a catalog from his taxidermy business and "The Bronzes of James L. Clark".

462. Game diorama. Fabulous oak frame, bubble glass hanging display of two mounted ruffed grouse mounted on a beautiful bird’s eye maple back. Mounted by H. L. Rand, Worcester, Massachusetts. Rand’s label on back. Excellent condition. Size: 26 ½" x 34 ½" (frame); 17 ½" x 25 ½" (glass).

468. Bobwhite Quail – Schaldach, William J. (1896-1982). Watercolor on paper. Signed by artist with an inscription to a Dr. Robert A. Bickley probably by Schaldach. Schaldach was born in Elkhart, Indiana. He studied at the Arts Students League as a pupil of Harry Wickey. In 1937, he was invited to visit a friend visiting the Sonora Desert in Arizona and developed a lifelong love for its colors and vitality. In 1956, he moved to Arizona permanently. He was strongly interested in hunting and fishing and did many paintings and etchings about this subject. He also wrote and illustrated numerous magazine articles and did a biography of Carl Rungius, the famed wildlife artist. His print "American Gamebirds – Woodcock" was published by the Derrydale Press in 1931. Size: 18" x 19 ½" (frame), 12" x 13" (image).

471. Small Fry –Two Bear Cubs and a Doe – Smith, Frank Vining (1879 – 1967). Signed. Oil on board. Frank Vining Smith was born in South Abington, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, he entered the Boston Museum School where he studied under Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell. For many years, he worked as a staff artist for the Boston Herald newspaper doing illustrations and cartoons. In 1925, he left this position to become a full time painter. He is best known for his paintings of ships and is said to have done over 1,000. He also illustrated many books, magazine articles and covers. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, had frequent one-man exhibitions and won many awards. This is an original painting which was reproduced as calendar art. The print taken from this work was recently offered on the internet by Log Cabin Arts. Size: 31" x 39" (frame), 27" x 39" (image).

476. Unexpected Game – Goodwin, Philip Russell. (1882 – 1935). Original oil on canvas. Original frame. Size: 31 ½" x 40" (frame); 24" x 33" (canvas). Considered to be one of America’s greatest illustrators of hunting, fishing and western life, Goodwin was born in Norwich, Connecticut in 1881. He sold his first illustrated magazine story at age fourteen. He attended the Brandywine School at Chadd’s Ford, Pennsylvania, a student of Howard Pyle and a classmate of N.C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parish. He also attended the Rhode Island School of Design. He became friends with Charles Russell and Carl Rungius. Although his studio was in New York City, he frequently traveled in the west gathering material and sketching for his paintings. His paintings often depicted hunters confronting game, cowboy scenes and animals. He did paintings for numerous advertising pieces and calendars, including those for Winchester, Remington and Marlin firearms companies. His "Horse and Rider" was adapted to be the trademark and logo of Winchester Repeating Firearms. He did illustrations and magazine covers for "Outdoor Life", "Saturday Evening Post", "Harper’s Weekly and Monthly", "Scribner’s" and many other publications. He also illustrated books, including Theodore Roosevelt’s "African Game Trails" and Jack London’s "Call of the Wild". He died in 1935. There has a great deal of renewed interest in his work. including several new world record auction prices in the past few years.

Thomas of Bangor, Maine made rods for Dame, Stoddard, however we have not been able to determine if this is one of them.

479. Fly rod. Two handed 3 piece mahogany salmon rod. 12 ft. length. 7 pieces in all: 1) 1 butt section, 2) 2 center sections, 3) 4 tips of different sizes, believed to be greenheart. Made by Forrest of Kelso, Scotland. Ca: 1880. In cloth bag.

500. Wintering Quail – Gromme, Owen J. (1986-1991). Print. Signed in pencil. Size: 27 3/8" x 32 3/8" (frame); 18 ½" x 23 ½" (image). Gromme was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. For many years, he worked at the Milwaukee Public Museum and participated in the installation of wildlife dioramas. It was here that he started painting in earnest. He illustrated a number of books and did many paintings. This work was published by the artist and Wild Wings. Gromme was selected to do the 1945 Federal Duck Stamp print.

504. Flight Woodcock – Ripley, A. Lassell. (1896 – 1969). Original etching signed in pencil. Plate size: 9" x 12". Unframed. Provenance: The Sporting Gallery & Bookshop. Beloved by American sportsmen, Ripley was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts, son of a classical musician. A pupil of Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson at Boston’s Museum School, he won a fellowship and traveled in Europe and Africa painting landscapes. During the Depression, however, the market for these works evaporated and Ripley began painting scenes of New England grouse and woodcock shooting, southern quail hunts, salmon and trout fishing and game birds which he sold to wealthy sportsmen. An avid hunter and angler himself, he developed a clientele of individuals, corporations and magazines who commissioned many of his works. He worked in oil, watercolor and was prolific printmaker. He won numerous awards and was a member of many prestigious artists’ societies, including the Guild of Boston Artists, of which he was president for ten years. He died in Lexington, Massachusetts on August 29, 1969.

Three separate scenes (pointer with snipe, gentlemen hunting quail, shorebirds) on one sheet with an engraved remarque by the artist of 2 quail. Cary was an illustrator for many magazines, including Harpers. At the age of 21, he joined a wagon train going west. At Fort Benton, he narrowly escaped capture by Crow Indians. He took a job on a survey crew which led him to the west coast, there returning to New York by ship. He also painted in oils, often doing scenes of Native American life. His epic painting, "The Buffalo Signal", sold at Sotheby’s on May 22, 2002 for $105,550. Size: 19" x 32 ½" (frame); 11 ½" x 25" (image).

Wilson spent 17 years in the U.S. Air Force, then was employed as a house painter and a sign painter. He painted wildlife as a hobby only. In 1976, he entered the South Dakota Duck Stamp competition and came in second. He then concentrated primarily on his artwork and won the South Dakota competition in 1979 and 1981. In 1981, Wilson entered the 1981 Federal Duck Stamp competition and his work, "Ruddy Ducks" was the winning entry.

569. Shorebirds – Pope, Alexander (1849-1924). Lithograph on board. Pope spent his entire life around Boston, Massachusetts. He was mainly self-taught. He loved hunting, fishing dogs and wildlife and both painted and sculpted these themes. He is especially well known for his trompe l’oeil paintings which include firearms, dead game and similar accoutrements. These demand very high prices in today’s market. Size: 26 ½" x 32 ½" (frame); 14" x 19 ½" (image).

570. Canada Geese in Flight (#1) and Canvasbacks (# 2) – Knap, Joseph D. (1875 - 1962). A pair of pencil and watercolor wash paintings. #1 signed J D Knap (some water staining), #2 signed J D Knap 1924. Provenance: Arthur Ackerman & Son Gallery, New York. Joe Knap was an avid duck hunter and an amateur artist. In 1924, at the insistence of one of his hunting companions, he displayed some of his watercolors at Ackerman Galleries in New York and it is believed that these two paintings were in that exhibition. He was an immediate success. Although he considered his real estate business to be his primary career pursuit, he sold many painting and also wrote and illustrated sporting articles which he sold to various publications. He was selected to do the 1937 Federal duck Stamp Painting, "Greater Scaup". He was also a devoted member of Ducks Unlimited and his paintings were frequently illustrated in D.U. Magazine. Size: both 15 ¼" x 20 ½" (frame).
