Frank W. Benson, born Salem Massachusetts, 1862, was a painter of impressionist seascapes and landscapes frequently with posed figures by his wife and children. He also painted hunting scenes. He spent most o his life in the seaport town of Salem where he loved trekking through the countryside for subject matter, especially wildlife. He is credited with making the American sporting print an art form and for being one of the 20th century outstanding wild life print makers. He studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and with Boulanger and Lefebvre at the Academie Julia in 1883 during the French Impressionism movement. By the early 1900's he was very successful and was a member of the Ten American Painters, a prestigious Group of early Impressionists. He taught in Portland, Maine at the Society of Art and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts. As a life long hunter, it was said that he knew birds as only a sportsman can. He worked in both etching and dry point excelling in clarity of design, the naturalness of his hunters and birds and the mastering of his etching techniques. 1. Also marked: the Sauer "S/U" logo, 12/70mm (gauge/chamber length), the German Eagle/nitro proofed mark, the Suhl shield and 640 (for June 1940 manufacturing date). According to James J. Cate, author of J. P. Sauer & Sohn, Suhl- Waffanstadt Volumes 1 and 2, this spectacular firearm, which is dated 640 (June 1940) was accepted by the German Luftwaffe for the purpose of training new pilots how to lead moving targets using clay pigeons. Of over 5,000 Sauer serial numbers cataloged by Mr. Cate, only two other Sauer over/under shotguns were accepted by the Luftwaffe. This compares with approximately 50 Luftwaffe Sauer produced drillings which he has recorded. Because this one has high quality wood and is in new condition, it may have possibly been presented to a high-ranking Luftwaffe officer and never used. Condition: Factory new as noted. Butt stock and checkering in mint condition. Scalloped box lock action with 100% brilliant case hardening colors. Standing breech face has 100% case hardening colors in the area of the top barrel showing absolutely no marks or corrosion. The breech face area in the area of the bottom barrel has almost all case hardening colors but a little discoloration indicating that the gun may have been fired just a few times. 100% case hardening colors on trigger. 100% brilliant blue on top lever and trigger guard. 100% case hardening colors on fore-end iron and fore-end release latch assembly. Foreend wood has had two wood repairs on either side at the top rear area. These repairs are so well done that they may have been done at the factory when the gun was manufactured. Otherwise foreend is in factory new condition. Certainly the rarest firearm we have sold. A beautiful and unusual combination of a military and sporting weapon, and in this condition, probably unique. 83. Firearm – C.S.S. Ald (?), London double barrel steel barrel hammer shotgun. Canvas size: 18" x 26". Framed. Signed: Philip R. Goodwin, lower left and "The Right of Way" on the back of the canvas. Wonderful painting depicting a bear stopped from crossing a log bridge by a porcupine. This work was used for the December 1903 cover of Outing Magazine. It is listed in Goodwin’s ledger book which reveals that it was sent to Outing at 239 5th Avenue, New York, on December 1, 1902 and that Goodwin was paid $75.00 for it. It comes from a mid-western family who has owned it since 1920. The actual Outing cover is illustrated on page 41 of Larry Len Peterson’s monumental book: Philip R. Goodwin – America’s Sporting & Wildlife Artist. Our thanks to Dr. Peterson for helping in identifying this work. Considered to be one of America’s greatest illustrators of hunting, fishing and western life, Goodwin was born in Norwich, Connecticut in 1881. He sold his first illustrated story to Collier’s Magazine at age eleven. He attended the Brandywine School at Chadd’s Ford, Pennsylvania, a student of Howard Pyle and a classmate of N.C. Wyeth. He also attended the Rhode Island School of Design. He became friends with Charles Russell (his best) and Carl Rungius. Although his studio was in New York City, he frequently traveled in the west gathering material and sketching for his paintings. His paintings often depicted hunters confronting game, cowboy scenes and animals. He did paintings for numerous advertising pieces and calendars, including those for Winchester, Remington and Marlin firearms companies. His "Horse and Rider" was adapted to be the trademark and logo of Winchester Repeating Firearms. He did illustrations and magazine covers for "Outdoor Life", "Saturday Evening Post", "Harper’s Weekly and Monthly", "Scribner’s" and many other publications. He also illustrated books, including Theodore Roosevelt’s "African Game Trails" and Jack London’s "Call of the Wild". He died in 1935. 96. Etching- Scottish Red Grouse in Flight.
