Cobbs Sale Sees Strong Bids for Aspens, Bears and Porcupines.

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. -- A painting entitled "Mountain Aspens, Taos" by E. Martin Hennings elicited active bidding at Cobbs Auctioneers art and antiques sale this past Saturday, October 11, followed by a strong price paid for a Phillip R. Goodwin oil sold during the sporting session on Sunday.

The Hennings, measuring 291/2 by 293/4 inches, depicted a landscape with a man and two pack animals traversing a trail surrounded by tall aspen trees. Bidding on the lot was brisk with the painting selling at $74,750.

The Goodwin oil, entitled "The Right of Way," depicted a bear and a porcupine facing each other while trying to cross a stream via a fallen log that spanned the banks. The desirable piece of illustrative art also attracted strong bids with it selling for $34,500.

Big Bids at Cobbs

Peterborough - Bidders jammed the Cobbs Auction house at Noone Falls over the holiday weekend to take part in their important antique and sporting auction.  Over 400 bidders were registered for the auction, including more than half on the telephone, including 25 international bidders. 

The top lot in Saturday's auction was an oil on canvas by E. Martin Hennings which sold for $74,500.00 to a New York Gallery.  Other highlights on Saturday included an oil on board by William Paxton bringing $17,250.00, an oil by Lilla Cabot Perry (a 19th century Hancock artist) bringing $6,900.00 and a pair of Italian bronzes marked P. Chiapparelli bringing $10,350.00.

The top selling furniture lot was a French marble top tea table which brought $18,400.  A carved mahogany Chippendale arm chair sold for $9775.00 and a mahogany Hepplewhite secretary went for a high bid of $9,220.00.

Also on Saturday a Waltham clock sold for $5,750.00, an early US map brought $9,200.00 and a Bijar oriental rug went for a high bid of $5,750.00.

On Sunday the auction featured sporting art and the top selling piece was a painting titled "The Right of Way" which was used for the December 1903 cover of Outing Magazine.  This sold for $34,500 to a phone bidder.  Other highlights included a pen and ink by A.B. Frost which sold for $9,2oo and an oil by Churchill Ettinger which sold for a top bid f $4,600.00

The top firearm lot was a Sharps 1859 military rifle which brought $8,050,
