A Fine and old Northern Kuba mask, Kuba- Ngeende or Ngongo; D.R. Congo
A fine 'Nyibita' mask of exceedingly attenuated form, the flat narrow forehead deeply carved into the recesses of the ocular orbits, the eyes as lozenge shaped with small holes pierced about the perimeter, the cheeks angular and the nose exceptionally long, the mouth jutting forward and the chin coming to a near point at the base of the mask. Fine old surface with excellent patina. H. 27 1/2"
Nyibita masks are utilized in dances and initiations by the Northeastern Kuba groups such as the Ngeende, Ngongo, Twa and some of the Northern Kete and Pyaang.
