French Empire One Drawer Mahogany and Upholstered Hamper Signed by Cabinet Maker Jacob D R Meslee, having a flaring upholstered lift top section set on a one drawer base with a scrolled front apron and supported by 4 carved paw feet, 45 1/2" W X 22"D X 33 1/2" T, it is impression signed under the front apron "Jaco R Mes", François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841), Sons of the famous cabinet maker George Jacob, Francois and his brother George took over the family business in 1796 and became the Jacob Frères on rue Mesaly, or Meslée, until 1825. After the death of his brother George, Francois continued with his own maker's stamp JACOB D. R. MESLEE. The firm was commissioned by the french elite including furnishing Malmaison, the country retreat of Josephine Bonaparte, wife of General Napoleon Bonaparte.
