Lot 244: Rare Cabinet Photograph of Frank E. Noyes Varden

Rare Cabinet Photograph of Frank E. Noyes Varden, 1845-1876, killed in action in Company I, 7th US Cavalry at the Battle of Little Big Horn, along with General Custer and his regiment. From Sept. 24th, 18th 61-Nov. 23, 1864, he served in Company A, 11th Maine volunteer Infantry as Frank Varden then deserted and re-enlisted in the cavalry as Frank E. Noyes. This photo is signed on the reverse , "Respectfully Yours F.E. Noyes," as well as pencil signed, "Chas, White," another sergeant with Major Reno Division at the Little Big Horn. Most likely this photo was taken in the period of time just preceding his death. He is buried on the battlefield in a marked mass grave with fellow fallen soldiers. From the collection of Richard Vitagliano of Concord, NH, collected over Forty Years.
