A Fine Yoruba Ibeji figure; possibly school of Areogun, Ekiti Yoruba; Osi; Nigeria
The figure of highly accomplished form, the face head with high coif with remains of blue pigment, the head with wide forehead and round eyes, wide nose and thin lips, rounded shoulders with jewelry, small breasts and waist-belt, hands to hips, standing on an integral base. H. 9"
This figure is clearly by the same hand as two male figures in Chemeche, 2003 'Ibeji', Fig. 228. The carving style is related to works by Areogun of Osi and would appear to be from his workshop if not by his own hand.
Comments: Property of a Southeastern Family
Provenance: Collected by the current owner's parents in Nigeria in the early 1960's with the Peace Corps.
